Long before the rise of the Incas, Peru’s northern coast gave birth to the oldest and most brilliant civilizations in the Americas. Traveling up the desert coastline from Lima, one first discovers Caral—the continent’s oldest city—followed by the impressive carved monoliths of Sechin. Further north, the region was the cradle of the Moche and Chimú cultures, true masters of irrigation, earthen architecture, and goldsmithing.
Today, this rich heritage is revealed through sites of exceptional scale, starting with the UNESCO-listed Chan Chan, the world’s largest adobe city. In Chiclayo, the remarkable Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum (Museo Tumbas Reales) houses the fabulous gold and gemstone treasures of the Lord of Sipán.
