The Three Faces of the Northern Amazon
The Peruvian Amazon is not defined by a single landscape. In the north of the country, it comprises three distinct zones. Each offers a unique experience depending on accessibility, climate, and the desired level of immersion.
The Accessible and Cultural Amazon: Moyobamba and Tarapoto
Located in the selva alta (high forest) at an altitude of approximately 400 meters, this region enjoys a pleasant climate. It is significantly less hot and stifling here than in the low jungle. This is a gentler side of the Amazon, characterized by abundant nature and a rich local culture. Beyond day-long river excursions—such as those to Tingana or Santa Elena—the area is renowned for its traditional craftsmanship. Here, you can meet producers in cacao or dragon fruit (pitahaya) fields and discover local handicrafts, particularly the traditional pottery of Chazuta or the village of Lamas.
The Deep Amazon: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
For total immersion in the wild jungle, the adventure begins in Tarapoto. You will first travel to Yurimaguas before reaching the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Here, you enter an Amazon of superlatives—a vast protected area accessible primarily by boat. It is a realm of raw biodiversity. The concept is simple: the longer you stay, the deeper you venture into the reserve. This significantly increases your chances of spotting elusive wildlife—such as the famous Amazon pink river dolphins, caimans, monkeys, and countless bird species.
The Exclusive Amazon: Iquitos and the Great Amazon River
Located in the far north, the city of Iquitos boasts a unique atmosphere, holding the distinction of being the largest city in the world inaccessible by road; It is accessible only by air. It serves as the historic gateway to the Amazon River. The area specializes in serene, high-end tourism, featuring superb, fully equipped lodges nestled deep within the forest and serving as departure points for luxury cruises. These exceptional vessels allow guests to sail the world’s largest river in a refined setting while enjoying daily guided excursions that bring them into close contact with nature.
