Detailed itinerary

Day 1 : Chachapoyas

Arrival in Chachapoyas. We will pick you up either at the bus station or the Chachapoyas airport and bring you to your hotel.

Day 2 : City Tour Chachapoyas and Huancas

After breakfast at the hotel, guided City tour starting at the Plaza de Armas by walking through the main roads that are decorated with beautiful colonial balconies, visit of the casonas. Lunch in town.

After lunch we will take the car for about 20 min. up to the pottery village of Huancas. You will visit the exposition center and the boutique and get a good insight into this Chachapoyan culture through the ceramic. From there we will walk 1 km to visit the Viewpoint of Canyon de Sonche de Huancas, the highest one in the Peruvian Amazonia.

Back to town and dinner at the restaurant Batan del Tayta.

 

Day 3 : Leymebamba – Museum and Experiences with local artists

After breakfast, transfer to Leymebamba: Your private chauffeur and tour conductor picks you up at the hotel. The transfer to Leymebamba takes about 3 hours.

Upon arrival in Leymebamba, Visit of the weaving women in Leymebamba. Weaving demonstration, explanation of the tradition, visit of their store.

From the village center we go to the Museum of Leymebamba. This museum exists since 2000 and shows 219 mummies as well as pottery, religious objects and fabrics that explain more about the Chachapoyas culture that were found in the Lagoon of the Condors in 1997.

Lunch in a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we will walk from the Museum to the workshop of Wood Artist Miguel Huaman (just about 30 minutes). Inspired by the Mommies and the structure of the mausoleum at the Laguna de los Condores, Miguel Huaman makes wooden sculptures and paints them according to Chachapoyan tradition. We will have time to work on our own sculpture.

Then back to Leymebamba and some free time.

Day 4 : Citadel of Kuelap

After breakfast transfer to Kuelap.  The fortress of Kuélap is situated on a mountain top at 3 000 m altitude. It was a religious and administrative center of the Chachapoyan culture that was build from 400 before JC, so 1000 years before the Incas! It is the most important archeological complex in the Amazonas region and today you can look at about 450 round houses, walls of up to 20 m and lots of mystery.

After the visit, lunch in a traditional restaurant in the village of Tingo Nuevo.

Return to Chachapoyas.

Day 5 : Sarcophagi of Karajia

Today Departure for Cruz Pata in the district of Luya. From there we will walk about 2 km. to visit the Sarcophagi of Karajia, the funeral statues that are high in the mountains and that show the highest funeral expression of Chachapoyan culture.

We have lunch at the hotel Tambo Sapalanchan before going back to Chachapoyas.

Day 6 :  Waterfall of Gocta

Departure for Gocta, one of the highest waterfalls in the world, only discovered 15 years ago!

We hike through luxurious vegetation where we can see orchids and bromelias, butterflies and, with a little chance we might see a Gallito de las Rocas or even a rare Spatuletail Hummingbird.  The hiking will take about 2 and a half hours before you arrive at the base of the waterfalls (about 6 km) and on your way you will have several beautiful views on the famous waterfall.

Lunch at the Gocta Lodge hotel and some free time before our return to Chachapoyas in the afternoon.

Day 7 : Chachapoyas and departure 

After breakfast, transfer to the bus station or airport in Chachapoyas.
