Yoga and Shamanism in Northern Peru

12 days / 11 nights

This very special Yoga and Shamanism Tour in Northern Peru will take you on a journey through time and history. You will see typical  landscapes of the Andes and Amazonia with a breathtaking view. This trip is balanced by yoga sessions that will re-connect you with the natural world. Your trip begins at Hacienda Achamaqui, on the Riverbank, a perfect great place for your introspection. You will discover archaeological and historics sites such as “the fortress of Kuelap”, also known as the Machu Picchu of the  North of Peru.

 

Day 1 :  Discover the region of Amazonas and The Hacienda Achamaqui 

After landing at Jaen in the north of Peru, we come to pick you up  at the airport. Your tour conductor will lead you to Chachapoyas, the capital of the region of Amazonas (4 Hours). You’ll be travelling through landscapes with a breathtaking view.

Arrival at the beautiful hacienda colonial Achamaqui and installation in your room. Take the opportunity to admire the Andean landscape from the terrasse. At the end of the afternoon, it will be time to take your Yoga mat and to “inhale and exhale” three times. This relaxation yoga  has the faculty to minimise jet lag effects and to maximise your well-being.

Day 2  : The colonial City of Chachapoyas and the village of  Huancas 

The amazing colonial City of Chachapoyas welcomes you with all its colors. You will be able to walk in the peaceful street of the Plaza de Armas. Close from there, you find the covered market where local farmers sell their fruits, vegetables, cheese and meat. This experience is really instructive as you will discover a lot of products from a different world : Many different kind of potatoes, vegetables of every colors, unkown spices and aromatic herbs. Why not taste a fresh fruit juice (ananas, mango, papaya) or even more exotic : the custard apple ?

After, you will visit the historic site of “Higos Urco”,  a place where in 1821 the people of Chachapoyas won a battle against the Spanish colonialists.  The  village of Huancas, is famous for its traditional clay pots. You will see the potters women of  the association and learn all about this tradition that is over 500 year old.

In the late afternoon, you will walk from the center of the village to admire the Cañon del Sonche, it is more than 11 km long and has a depth of 962 meters. From here you have a fantastic view of the Andes and the Sunset !

Return to the Hacienda for another session of your well-being yoga.

The rest of the evening is free.

Day 3 – Leymebamba and the Mummy museum

Today you will visit the agricultural village of Leymebamba (3 hours). It is a peaceful and green valley, whose inhabitants lived until 1997 of agriculture. The discovery of a mausoleum on a steep slope of the lagoon of the Condors (a 10 hour-walk from the village) has radically changed the fate of the habitants. They helped archaeologists recover 219 mummies from the mausoleum and learned a lot about their own people – the Chachapoyas – and the influences of the Incas.

In 2000,  the museum of Leymebamba was inaugurated. There is exposed : mummies, many ceramics, fabrics and wooden sculptures of the Chachapoya civilization. The museum also has a unique collection of quipus yarn systems with different colors and knots that allowed the Incas to count but also to write stories.

Before visiting the museum, we will visit the weavers of Leymebamba. The ladies will explain the exact manufacturing process, from wool production to dyeing and weaving with wooden sticks.

After lunch at El Sabor del Mishqui restaurant (at your expense), we will meet a local shaman who will present his powers of spiritual healing.  He will give you extraordinary insights and advice on relaxation and well-being.

Day 4 :  Kuelap, the great fortress of the mysterious “Cloud Warriors”

You will leave Leymebamba and we will drive to Tingo Nuevo. A newly opened cable car will take you up to 3,000 meters to the fortress of Kuelap. This extraordinary fortress is as impressive as the famous Inca Machu Picchu site. The site was created by the people of the Chachapoya, also named “people of the clouds”, as the name given to them by the Incas. The Chachapoya were described by the Incas as tall and fair-skinned.

Before we visit this mystical place, you will participate in a traditional Andean ceremony. First, an Andean priest will summon the spirits of the mountain (Apus) to ask permission to enter. Then he will thank them with various offerings (pago a pachamama).  Our guide will give us a guided 2-hour tour, to make you discover the secrets of this mysterious people.

After visiting Kuelap, you will have lunch at the rural restaurant in the village of Tingo Nuevo (at your expense). Then you will return to Chachapoyas (about 3 hours).

Day 5 : Sarcophagi of Karajia – silent witnesses of a mysterious civilization

From the village of Cruz Pata you will walk about 30 minutes through the countryside. You will have the opportunity to learn about local agriculture but above all, the positive aspects of eco-responsible tourism.

On the way back, you will stop at Tambo Sapalachan, a lovely quiet home, which was set up by the owners Nora and Paul. With them, you can enjoy the beautiful garden and the stunning view. Chef Paul will serve you a delicious lunch with typical regional specialities.

Back at Hacienda Achamaqui, you will once again enjoy a well-being and relaxing yoga class.

Day 6 : Mystical hike to one of the highest waterfalls in the world

You will start your day with a beautiful hike through a cloud forest. This mystical place will take you to one of the highest waterfalls in the world, the cascade of Gocta  (771 meters). This incredible and impressive waterfall was not in any map until 2006 because of the legends and myths around it. Thus, its existence was kept secret until the discovery by a German researcher: Stefan Ziemendorff in 2002.

Different points of view show us the impressive facets of this magical waterfall. On the three hour walk you will observe butterflies, wild orchids, and (with any chancd) the national bird of Peru: the “Gallito de las Rocas”. The walk is rather difficult, if you prefer, you can ask for a horse. Please be aware that there are still 3 km to be walked.

As a reward, you will be welcomed at the reputated Gocta ​​Lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will have another well-being yoga session with view on the magic Gocta waterfall.  

Return to Hacienda Achamaqui and rest of the day free.

Day 7 : Departure for the yoga retreat and stopover in Moyobamba

Today, we will leave Chachapoyas and we will drive to Moyobamba, the capital of the department of San Martin. Because of its subtropical climate, Moyobamba is also called the Peruvian capital of orchids. Afterwards, you will take a short rest in the beautiful seaside resort of Yacumana. It is a natural place with small lakes, a sandy beach on the banks of the Black River. A typical restaurant will prepare delicious fish for your lunch. Then you will continue to Moyobamba until the Casa Hospedaje “El Porton”, where you will pass the night.

After breakfast, we will pick you up by private car and bring you to Tarapoto for your wellbeing yoga retreat (travel time about 3.5 hours).

Yoga classes

You will practice two types of Hatha Yoga everyday, accompanied by our certified and experienced yoga teacher, Johanne. The morning yoga class will be stimulating and energizing. The afternoon will be to soothe and rebalance your mind and body. Johanne is a trained hatha yoga teacher – a yoga style derived from Krishna macharya from South India. This gentle style of yoga goes deep, moving you away from stress.

After your well-being yoga you will have the opportunity to chill out in the lagoon, explore the jungle on the hiking trails, or simply enjoy the exceptional natural environement  in your hammock.

The programm also includes an amazon flower bath to purify your body. The walks through the tropical landscape will offer you the magnificent spectacle of waterfalls jumping into the pool, a real moment of pleasure and ultimate well-being.

Day 12 : Departure and flight via Lima

The end of your yoga retreat will be at 12 o’clock and the transfer to the Tarapoto airport (without guide).
