Itinerary

Archaeology Chiclayo – Chachapoyas – Cajamarca

10 Days – 9 Nights

This trip to Northern Peru passes through three regions that are very rich in archaeological sites. By combining natural discovery and interactif exchange with local people, you will get a real inside into ancient and modern Northern Peru.

 

Day 1 – Huaca Rajada – Tucume – Museum Tumbas Reales

Arrival at the airport in Chiclayo and transfer to the hotel. After breakfast, visit at the archaeological site Huaca Rajada where the grave of the Lord of Sipan was found. Visit of the site museum.

We continue to the Archaeological Complex of the Pyramids of Tucume, a valley that is home to 26 adobe pyramids from the Lambayeque culture. Here we will also visit the site museum and climb on the view point on top ofthe Cerro Purgatorio in order to enjoy the beautiful view on the valley and the pyramids, just before having lunch (included).

Finally we continue our journey to the Museum Tumbas Reales of the Lord of Sipan in Lambayeque where you will see the remainings of the Lord of Sipan, as well as over 2 000 pieces and jewelry in gold, silver and copper, but also jewelry out of feathers and different fabrics.

Back to Chiclayo and the hotel.

Day 2 – Transfer Chiclayo – Chachapoyas (460 kilometres / 10 hours)

After breakfast, we leave to the Amazonas region, to the community of Cocachimba. We will have lunch on the road as a box lunch.

Overnight stay at the Gocta Andes Lodge.

 

Day 3 –  Waterfall of Gocta 771 m height

Today we will hike or ride (horse included) to Gocta, one of the highest waterfalls in the world. The hike will be 6 km and will take about 2 hours 30 minutes one way.

During our hike we observe the local agriculture activities (such as coffee and sugar cane), we walk through the typical cloud forest vegetation, home to the famous Spatuletail Colibri, the Gallito de las Rocas (the national bird), as well as orchids and bromeliads. Lunch is included this day.

Back to Cocachimba, dinner on your own and overnight stay in your hotel.

 

 

Day 4 – Sarcophagi of Karajia – City Tour Chachapoyas – Huancas 

Today we will leave early and drive along the Utcubamba Valley before taking the uphill road to Cruz Pata (2 700 m above sea level) for about 2 hours. From there we walk another two kilometers and we arrive at the Sarcophagi of Karajia, the funeral statues of the Chachapoya culture. 

After our visit, we leave direction Chachapoyas (2 335 m) where we should arrive around 2 pm. Lunch (included) and city tour, beginning at the Plaza de Armas, the pedestrian area, but also the plains of Higus Hurco. We will then take the car again to drive to Huancas, a village well known for its pottery.

From Huancas we walk about one kilometer to the view point of the Canyon de Sonche, the highest canon in the Peruvian Amazonia. Then back to Chachapoyas by the view point of Luya Hurco from where we have an amazing view on Chachapoyas and the majestic mountains around. Back to the hotel and free dinner.

Day 5 – Archaeological complex of Kuelap (Pre-Inca Culture Chachapoya)

After breakfast we leave Chachapoyas for the archeological complex of Kuelap ! After an one-hour drive, we make a stop at the site of Macro : Circular stone constructions with diamant-shaped decorations from pre-inca periods. We then continue another two hours by passing several Andean villages.

Once we arrive at La Malca, the parking of Kuelap, we will walk another two kilometers easy-walking up to Kuelap, this amazing construction that was built from 400 after JC onwards by the Chachapoyas people. Our visit will take around three hours, including information about the administrative, military and ceremonial functions of Kuelap, as well as the more than 450 round houses on this 6 ha territory in 3 000 m altitude. At the end of the visit we will have lunch in the village of Maria before turning back to Chachapoyas and the hotel.

Day 6 – Tour Mausoleum of Revash – Mummy Museum of Leymebamba

This morning we will drive for about two hours to the Pueblo del Ingenio. From there we walk (or horse ride) about 5 km, 2 hours on a uphilly trail. We will visit the Mausoleum of Revash (2 600 m altitude), another evidence of the Chachapoya funeral constructions. They are situated on a mountain cliff and look like houses with roofs and have between one and three levels, are decorated with symboles such as the Andean cross.

Then we walk back to the car and continue to Leymebamba, another hour. After lunch (included) in Leymebamba, we have just 10 more minutes to the Mummy Museum of Leymebamba where you will see a collection of 219 mummies in perfect conservation state and many other objects from the Chachapoya culture, such as fabrics, ceramics and a quipus exposition. Then back to Leymebamba and the hotel.

  

 

Day 7 – Transfer Chachapoyas – Cajamarca (260 Kilometres / 10 hours)

Today we leave Leymebamba and drive up to the mountain top called Barro negro on 3 600 m altitude. From here we will have a stunning view on the Maranon valley and the mountain chains of the Andes. We then drive downhill to the Balsas valley where we enjoy the green color of the fruit trees such as coconut, mangoes, plums, avocados or chocolate. Another time we have to drive up to 3 100 m to the Gelic top and then continue to Celendin where we will have our lunch box before arriving in Cajamarca (2 800 m) and the hotel.

    

Day  8 – Kuntur Wasi / Huambocancha / Granja Porcon

Today we will visit Huambocancha that is well known for its sculptors of granit and marble. After about three hours drive we arrive at the archaeological site of Kuntur Wasi, one of the most complete ceremonial centres of the pre-inca period. On several platforms many pieces of wrought gold such as crowns, nose jewelry, necklaces had been found and they are considered being the oldest ones in South America. We have a closer look at the site museum.

After the visit, we have lunch (included) and then continue to Granja Porcon : A perfect spot for discovering rural tourism surrounded by nature, following the daily activities of the community, such as keeping the cows, plant trees or cultivate the soil. Since 1988 the project has transformed an inhospitable place into a charming village surrounded by pin trees. We then return to Cajamarca and the hotel.

Day 9 – Cumbemayo – City Tour – Cajamarca

We leave Cajamarca for Cumbe Mayo. On the road we visit the view point Bellavista as well as the pre-inca temple of Layson, the sanctuary and the sacrifice stone. We continue with the Stone Forest and the Canal of Cumbe Mayo (the most important pre-inca hydraulic work of this period). Lunch is included.

We then return to Cajamarca and make a city tour : Historical centre with its Plaza de Armas, the Temple of San Francisco, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de los Dolores, and finally the view point of Santa Apolina. From here we continue to the thermal bath “Banos termales del Inca” where you can enjoy the medicinal virtues of the thermal water (not included – natural hot springs up to 78°C).

Day 10 – Ventantillas de Otuzco – Transport to the airport

After breakfast we travel to the Ventanillas de Otuzco, one of the most important pre-inca cimeteries that belongs to the Cajamarca culture. After this visit, transfer to the airport and end of our services.
